NI Boccia Players competed in Scottish International Open Championship
Northern Ireland was represented by five athletes in the 2017 Scottish International Open Boccia Championships in Inverclyde. The competition was an excellent opportunity for the players to compete against the best players in the world including BC1 Paralympic Champion David Smith and BC4 World Champion Stephen Maguire, and top ranked BC3 players Patrick Wilson & Jamie McCowan.
Making their international debuts for Northern Ireland in the BC3 category were Ballyclare based duo Robyn McBride & Hannah Uprichard. Both girls have progressed through the performance pathway in Northern Ireland during the past 18 months and have shown excellent form in recent national league games.They each gave excellent performances against two very strong English opponents and can be very proud of their debut tournament.
In the BC2 category Scott Cromie from Rathfriland made his mark against some tough Danish & English opponents and was delighted to return home with a Bronze medal. Also in BC2, Northern Ireland’s 2016 Rio Paralympian Claire Taggart competed in GB Boccia colours bringing home a Gold medal.
In the BC1 category Fermanagh’s William Graham renewed his rivalry with world champion David Smith and Ireland’s Niamh Dunphy in a tough group that resulted in him returning home with a well deserved Bronze medal.
